September News - Lake Desire Community

September 5 Updates
1. Tree hit by lightning at Community Club – A tree directly in front (on the road) of the Community Club was hit by lightning this morning. Picture attached. Thank you to those who called and emailed about it. We will take a look to see if it 1) is on our property or is King County as it’s on the road and 2) determine if it needs looked at professionally for removal. We are hoping it will heal and we can keep the tree. Thankfully it was hit before kids were waiting for the bus to arrive to take them to school.

2. PLEASE RSVP ASAP! Wine/Beer Tasting Fundraiser – Saturday, September 21st 5:30pm – Join us for our Fall Fundraiser this year, Wine and Beer Tasting at the Wine Alley in Fairwood. We have amended the evening to include both types of fun refreshments! The Wine Alley graciously offered us more space in their shop for this evening, so spread with word with your neighbors and friends outside Lake Desire so we can get a great turnout.

Cost is $20, and a portion of the proceeds will go to the capital fund at the LDCC to help cover the costs of the new flooring. Please RSVP to this email, staffordlkdesire@gmail.com or phone 425-917-0336 by September 15.

3. Reminder – Kids have started back to school so please keep an eye out for those parents and students who are walking to/from school and waiting for the bus! Thank you.

4. Summary of the 2013 weed abatement program for Lake Desire. Ben kept to his schedule announced in June for the various activities, with only a slight deviation in June due to weather conditions.

Fragrant Water Lilies were sprayed twice - once in June and once in August. Purple Loosestrife was hunted and sprayed twice – once in July and once in August.

For Eurasian Watermilfoil, they did hand pulling using snorkel gear.  One day around the west side of the lake in July and another day around the east side of the lake in August.

I’m asking for all homeowners around the lake to watch for blooming purple loosestrife and that if found, you carefully cut and bag the blooms/seeds for throwing in the trash.  This is an important follow-up activity to get plants that were missed.  If you’re able to pull or dig the root out, it would help, as these are perennial plants.

Many thanks to the volunteers who helped with signage for the water lily spraying: Jim and Betsy Locatelli,  Donna Snure, Jen Samson, Jan Falkenhagen, Patti Wall, Craig Wallace, John Emerson, and Edson Smith.
Thanks to Karen and Keana Walker for helping with the milfoil pulling.

Next summer will be the third and final year of the Weed Abatement grant.

There will be more spraying of the fragrant water lilies that return and Ben is planning to use a different chemical treatment for the milfoil.  I don’t believe he’s planning on doing any further purple loosestrife spraying, but he’s encouraging a few of the local residents to get licensed for spraying this weed around the lake.  More on this later.  Any feedback on the Weed Abatement program can be e-mailed to me at Roger.Danneman@q.com
